Most SEO case studies are about a site that already had authority and pushed it further. This one is harder, and more instructive: a brand-new dental directory, launched from nothing, with no backlinks and no history. Within roughly eight weeks it had earned over 66,000 Google Search impressions and was ranking across 37 UK cities — engineered reach, not bought reach. Here is how.
The Challenge
A new directory faces the toughest starting position in search. There is no domain authority, no backlink profile, no indexed pages, and no track record for Google to trust. The dental space is also crowded — every practice has a website, aggregators compete for the same terms, and “near me” intent is fierce.
The goal was not to win one city. It was to establish national visibility at scale — a ranking footprint across dozens of UK cities — fast, and without the one lever most people reach for first: buying links.
The Strategy
The answer was programmatic SEO done properly — architecture as the growth engine.
1. A page for every practice, in every city. The directory was structured so each dental practice gets its own dedicated, richly-structured page, nested under its city. That produced over a thousand focused, individually-rankable pages — each one answering a specific “who are the dentists in [place]” or “[practice name]” query.
2. Clean structure Google could trust. On a zero-authority domain, structure has to do the work authority normally does. Every page shipped semantic HTML, consistent schema markup, and clear internal linking from city hubs down to individual practices — the signals Google uses to understand and rank a large site it has never seen before.
3. Fast indexing at scale. A thousand pages are worth nothing until they are indexed. New and updated URLs were submitted the moment they published, so the directory was crawled and evaluated in days, not months.
4. No backlinks required — by design. The entire result below was achieved at a Domain Rating of zero. This was a deliberate test of how far clean architecture alone can carry a new site. The answer: a long way.
The Results
- Over 66,000 Google Search impressions in 90 days, from a standing start.
- 1,113 pages ranking across the directory.
- Roughly 950 keywords in Google’s top 10, with 41 already in the top three.
- Ranking across 37 UK cities — Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Glasgow, Bristol, Sheffield and more — from a single directory build.
- All of it on DR 0 — no backlinks. The rankings came from structure, schema and content alone.
- A textbook launch curve: near-flat for the first weeks, then a steep month-two breakout as the indexed pages reached critical mass.
The Honest Read
This is a visibility-footprint result: impressions and rankings, established fast and at scale. Click-through is the next phase. Much of the early ranking is for practice-name searches, where the practice’s own site wins the click — so the directory’s own traffic grows as we target category and treatment terms where the directory page is the destination buyers want. We flag this deliberately: the honest version of a case study is the one you can defend. The hard part — index coverage and rankings across 37 cities on a zero-authority domain — is done, and it is the foundation everything else builds on.
What Made It Work
- Architecture over authority — a clean, schema-complete page for every practice and city, so structure did the work backlinks usually do.
- Scale, indexed fast — over a thousand pages crawled and evaluated in days, not months.
- Fundamentals, not shortcuts — no bought links, no thin doorway pages; genuine structure Google could trust.
- A foundation built to compound — the same clean pages that rank in Google are the ones that later become eligible for AI citations.
Disciplined SEO still moves the needle — and for a brand-new site, it is often the fastest route to national visibility. That is core to what we do, alongside the AI-search work we are known for.
