There is substantial overlap and a meaningful divergence. Both reward relevance, authority and technical accessibility. AI systems weight factual precision, source clarity and extractability far more heavily, and weight engagement signals far less. That is why a page can rank on page one and never be cited.

The short version

Where they agree

Most of the foundation is shared, and this is genuinely good news because it means existing SEO investment is not wasted. Both systems need to reach your page, both prefer content that matches what was asked, both use signals of authority and trust, and both are influenced by what credible independent sources say about you. Analyses consistently find that a large majority of AI-cited URLs also rank well conventionally. Strong SEO is close to a precondition rather than a competitor.

Where they diverge

Extractability. A ranking system points at a page and lets the reader find the answer. A generative system has to lift a self-contained statement out of the page. Content that buries its answer under three paragraphs of preamble ranks fine and gets cited rarely, because there is nothing cleanly liftable in it.

Specificity. Ranking tolerates vagueness. Citation does not. “We have extensive experience in this area” cannot be quoted usefully. “We have advised on 40 transactions in this sector since 2019” can. Models reach for statements that commit to something checkable.

Entity clarity. Search can serve a page without being certain who published it. A model generally will not name a business it cannot confidently resolve. Ambiguous identity is a much harder blocker for citation than for ranking.

Engagement. Dwell time, click-through and behavioural signals shape ranking. In a generated answer there is frequently no click at all, so these signals carry far less weight.

Freshness. Both care, but differently. Some assistants retrieve live and some answer from training data, which means an outdated page can persist in AI answers long after it has been updated on your site.

How to check it yourself

Pick a page that ranks well. Ask an assistant the question that page answers. If it responds without citing you, read your own opening paragraph and ask whether any single sentence in it could be quoted as the answer. Usually the failure is visible immediately once you look for it.

What to do about it

  1. Put the answer in the first 60 words, before context or preamble.
  2. Replace vague claims with checkable ones, including numbers and dates.
  3. Fix entity signals so the model knows who is making the claim.
  4. Keep the SEO foundations. They are not in competition with this work, they underpin it.
  5. Measure citations, not just positions. Otherwise you are grading the wrong exam.
